College Football Rumors: Is Texas A&M Taking Talents To SEC?

Is the SEC trying to gig the Aggies?

In the case of Big 12 commissioner, Don Beebe, he better hope that this is just a mere rumor.  Just when we thought that college football was done with teams changing conferences, there may be a dust storm brewing down in College Station.

According to the Sporting News, Texas A&M has been having discussions with the Southeastern Conference about a possible defection.

Rick Perry, current governor of Texas—and possible GOP presidential candidate—recently stated that his alma mater is in private talks with the SEC about a potential move.

The Aggies have been a charter member of the Big 12 since its inception in 1996, was also a founding member of the—now defunct—Southwestern Conference back in 1915

The Big 12, which had already lost Nebraska to the Big 10 and Colorado to the Pac-12, will face serious possibility of becoming extinct.

If this indeed true, then A&M will be in for one rude wake-up call in leaving the Big 12, as they would be in the same conference that has produced the last five straight BCS national champions in Auburn(2010), Alabama(2009), Florida(2008, 2006) and LSU(2007)

While it may help in raising its own national profile and get out from under the shadow of their Austin rivals, Texas A&M and their head coach, Pat Sherman would have to recruit against the likes of Alabama’s Nick Saban, LSU’s Les Miles and South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier for blue-chip players in his own backyard.

Good luck with that one.

Texas A&M would also risk losing arch-rival Texas, due to SEC regular-season scheduling, the rivalry which has been played since 1894, is the regular-season finale for both schools, Texas leads the all-time series, 75-37.
