This Hokies defense was regarded as one of the better ones in the ACC and they were respectable. The only issue was they ran into a motivated Pitt team that was 0-2 with embarrassing losses to Cincinnati and Youngstown State.
It helped to have Ray Graham in the backfield as he went absolutely bonkers alongside true freshman Rushel Shell. The two together found paydirt twice and ran for 251 yards.
Pittsburgh picked up a huge win wheras the Hokies cannot almost count their BCS at-large possibilities good-bye. Yes, this is just the third week of the season but the ACC has a terrible reputation to being with.
This loss is devastating since Frank Beamer and Virginia Tech has won ten or more game in 11 consecutive season and that could be in jeopardy since the offense looks absolutely lost.
Logan Thomas has zero help around him and it is clear as day since he led the team in rushing with just 28 yards rushing. The passing game has been disappointing and Marcus Davis (4 catches for 129 yards) was the only one who did anything relevant.
Virginia Tech still are the odds on favorites to represent the Coastal in the ACC Title against Clemson or Florida State, but they have their work cut out for them at the moment.
The offense has major issues and this isn’t the same defense that can bottle up the running game let alone come away with that crucial turnover. They will not only drop a few slots, but they will drop completely out of my top 25 as well on Monday.
The Panthers need to win a few Big East road games before we can officially label them as contenders, but the Hokies have a fairly soft slate in the coming weeks.
