The Cincinnati Bengals signed wide receiver Mohamed Sanu of Rutgers University Monday afternoon, the first of their two third-round selections (83rd overall) in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Sanu french fried Rutgers’ opponents for 115 receptions last season, shattering Larry Fitzgerald’s Big East record of 92 catches for the University of Pittsburgh back in 2003.
The New Jersey native is also the conference’s career receptions leader (210), having broken the mark of 207 set for Rutgers by current Bengal Brian Leonard from 2003-06.
Sanu’s receiving yards total (2,263 over three seasons) ranks fourth in Rutgers’ history.
Known for his versatility as an offensive performer, the 6-2, 218-pound receiver also passed for 207 yards with four scores and rushed for 653 yards and nine touchdowns during his collegiate career.
“Mo has been impressive in the work he’s been able to do with us thus far, and of course it’s great to have this step accomplished,” said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. “He can play a big role for us this year.”
Other than Sanu, the Bengals now have signed all but one of their 10 draft picks from April.
Among them are cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick of Alabama (first round; signed on May 18), guard Kevin Zeitler of Wisconsin (first round), defensive tackle Devon Still of Penn State (second), tight end Orson Charles of Georgia (fourth), cornerback Shaun Prater of Iowa (fifth), wide receiver Marvin Jones of California (fifth), safety George Iloka of Boise State (fifth) and running back Daniel Herron of Ohio State (sixth).
Defensive tackle Brandon Thompson of Clemson (third round selection) has yet to sign.
