New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is quite a character.
The outspoken, boisterous and audacious coach refers to New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick as a “genius” in his role as a as a Patriots-crazed lawyer in the upcoming film That’s My Boy, which hits theaters on June 15.
The film also features Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, Erin Andrews, Vanilla Ice and Adam Sandler.
“We thought it’d be funny because we wanted a lawyer who could handle degenerates well,” Sandler said in a conference call. “And we thought Rex could handle anybody.”
Ryan’s character will only be on screen for about five minutes, but he impressed Sander with his preparation.
Perhaps more impressive is his willingness to dig deep into his character.
Ryan’s office will be filled with Boston-area sports gear and he even compliments Tom Brady on his jawline.
“Bill talked to [brother and coach Rob Ryan] and said, ‘I can’t believe Rex is involved with this with my bobble head on his desk,” Ryan said. “He is looking forward to watching it.”
In addition to his leading role in HBO’s Hard Knocks, Ryan has also appeared in an episode of CSI: New York.
“Ryan hasn’t delivered on any of his Super Bowl guarantees, but he consistently provides a few laughs, which puts him ahead of some of Sandler’s recent efforts,” writes Darin Gantt of ProFootballTalk.com.
Many view recent Sandler movies as disappointing, but perhaps he’ll redeem himself with Samberg and Ryan.
