Matt Flynn may only have two career starts under his belt, but the Green Bay Packers‘ 26-year-old backup quarterback will unquestionably collect widespread interest on the open market.
The 6-2, 225-pound quarterback out of LSU recently received a ringing endorsement from his fellow teammate, Aaron Rodgers, who ironically is the same size as Flynn—6’2″, 225 pounds. Rodgers has seen as much from Flynn as anyone and the star signal-caller shared his verdict with SI.com NFL Senior Writer Peter King.
“The team that gets Matt is going to be very happy, I can promise you,” Rodgers said. ”They’ll be getting a top-15 quarterback.”
Some suggest this might be a slight insult or a back-handed compliment. Teams generally don’t go out of their way to hand over the keys to their franchise for a Top 15 NFL quarterback. However, in my mind, Rodgers is indicating that Flynn is already a Top 15 QB, rather than hinting that Flynn has the potential to one day become a decent, middle-of-the-road starting quarterback.
In no particular order, currently the Top 15 quarterbacks in the league appear to be Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Matt Schaub, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford, Jay Cutler, Andy Dalton, Ben Roethlisberger, Michael Vick, Tony Romo and of course Aaron Rodgers.
That’s not a bad bunch and Rodgers considers him to be just as good as some of them, if not better. I didn’t even mention Alex Smith, Sam Bradford, Josh Freeman, Tim Tebow, Mark Sanchez, Joe Flacco, Matt Cassel, Kyle Orton, Carson Palmer or Jason Campbell.
One thing’s certain: Brett Favre never would have given Rodgers such praise and recognition, let alone for a guy with only two starts. While the seventh-round selection has his work cut out for him, he’s also got a big pay-day ahead as well.
The Seattle Seahawks, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins are four of the key front-runners fighting for Flynn’s services. Let the Flynnsanity begin.
